Filming TIPS

~~Ideas for filming~~

  1. There are 3 types of filming you can do throughout the day:

    1. “B-Roll” - this is when you film a steady, still shot of your apartment, of the street, of your view, of your kids running around, your coffee cup - whatever you want. It is a steady, still shot and you are not talking. Throughout the day we will need multiple “b-roll” shots of your life - take as many of these as you want.

      1. Examples: Focus on showing us parts of your day that has changed because of Covid 19.  Some examples: homeschooling your kids, making lunch for your family since everyone’s home, clapping for workers at 7pm, wearing a mask to go to work, sweatpants, zooming your friends, dancing in empty streets,  mourning the loss of a family member from afar.

    2. MTV Cribs shot / show and tell shot - this is where you are filming while showing us your house, your work, etc. You can film from your point of view and explain, or your quarantine partner can film you explaining.

      1. Examples: Your house, your work, your commute, your walk through your neighborhood. Show us your world - you can explain as you walk.

    3. Self-Interview.  Find a quiet time during the day and a quiet place and film yourself talking about your time in quarantine.  Sample questions >>>

  2. A good way to think about what to film is to try to film 3 actions throughout the day (morning, afternoon, evening) & one self-interview at the end of the day (or whenever you have quiet time).

  3. You’re telling a story about your life in this moment. When you film something - let’s say making a coffee in the morning - film it from beginning to end.

  4. PLEASE REMEMBER: Anyone that you film - you need their permission to film them - they need to approve and you’ll need their contact info. We cannot use any footage of people being filmed without their permission. If you’re in a crowded street and - it’s  ok to film people as long as it’s very quick and not prolonged.

  5. Keep track of the time of day you film - either note it and send it to me - or mention the time while filming.

  6. Style: You can film from your POV, but at least once have someone you live with film you - or if you’re alone - prop up your phone to film yourself at least once.

Can I film on my phone?

Yes - no prob. Just flip your phone to the side so you’re filming horizontally.

When speaking or recording sound, try to be as close to the phone as possible, to pick up the audio clearly.

Anything else to know for shoot day?

Please don’t wear logos if at all possible. If I get sued by Nike it’s all over.

Have fun!

Share!

Please share this project with as many people as you’d like! The idea is to have as many countries and cities represented as possible.

What should I talk about?

At the end of the day, or whenever you have a moment - go somewhere quiet and film yourself. Make sure there’s no music playing in the background!

  • Describe where you live, how quarantine was/is for you in your city.

  • How are you feeling today? How has your POV changed throughout the past few months?

  • What was the worst part / worst day of quarantine. Why? Tell us the story - send pictures or video if you have.

  • What was the best part of quarantine? Are there any rituals you adopted that you want to keep after this period? Tell us the story - send pictures or video if you have.

  • What (if anything) scares you about Covid19 or life after the virus?

  • How has your city & country specifically responded to the pandemic? How do you feel about the response?

  • Did you have Covid19? Or did you know anyone who did or who passed away? Would you like to talk about that?

  • Did you lose work? Did you keep working the whole time? How has your relationship to work changed during this period?

  • How many days have you been quarantined? What was the first day like? What was the last day like? What were you doing on the last day before quarantine?

  • Do you live with other people? How has that been?

  • Has this time made you think about anything in your life differently?

  • What do you want people to know about how quarantine was/is in your city?

  • Look back at the photos in your phone over the past few months - is there a photo that sums up your experience? Tell us about that.

When should I film?

Shoot day is Wednesday May 27, 2020! Anytime between midnight and midnight is great.
